The champagne flows and the beautiful people are out in force during the summer months at the Coast’s glamorous beach clubs. Launched every year with a sumptuous extravaganza of white, silver and gold opening parties, the clubs range from chilled-out settings for those seeking tranquil discretion – often in the company of visiting celebrities – to more riotous, self-indulgent venues with thumping music and hardcore revellers.
Many beach club aficionados will already be familiar with Nikki Beach, an international network of establishments from the Caribbean to Europe. Conveniently located halfway between Marbella and Fuengirola, Marbella’s Nikki Beach is, in addition to its summer-long party season, also popular for connoisseurs of fine dining – from sushi and seafood to sumptuous salads.
In fact, many people (especially local residents) use the Coast’s beach clubs more as an al fresco lunch option rather than the full festive experience. For those on holiday, however, or enjoying a relaxing day off with friends, the options are wide and varied, with clubs opening from mid-morning to late afternoon.
In the heart of Puerto Banús, Ocean Club is one of the most popular venues for pleasure seekers, while La Sala Beach just along the beach towards San Pedro de Alcántara is a traditional haunt for visiting footballers and reality TV participants. Further down the coast, on Estepona’s “New Golden Mile”, Purobeach is located in the exotic surroundings of Laguna Village commercial centre.
In addition to these high-end beach clubs, the Costa del Sol is dotted with hundreds of charming chiringuitos (beach bar-restaurants), most with sunbeds, parasols and waiter service – and family-friendly.
