Benalmádena is a municipality of fascinating contrasts. Extending from the eastern border of Fuengirola and just a short promenade walk to another popular high-rise beach resort, Torremolinos, Benalmádena is home to more than 50,000 residents and divided into three distinctive areas…
Benalmádena Costa is the popular coastal area for tourists – with some of the most attractive beaches in the area. Stretching for eight kilometres along the coastline, with a backdrop of steep mountains, this purpose-built area has a host of great bars, restaurants and shops along the seafront promenade.
Torrequebrada Golf, one of the Coast’s most well established courses and a former venue for the Spanish Open, is situated just one kilometre from Benalmádena Costa. At the Sealife Benalmádena aquarium visitors can enjoy close encounters with a fascinating ocean world of sea creatures, rock pool settings with crabs and stingrays, and shark feeding.
The Arroyo de la Miel residential area has shops, bars and restaurants aplenty. Thrills are the order of the day (and night during the warmer months) for the whole family at Tivoli World, a magical amusement park with breathtaking rides and spectacular shows, surrounded by gardens and illuminated fountains and offering a variety of “themed” restaurants. The Selwo Marina dolphinarium features a spectacular salt-water pool where dolphin and sea lion exhibitions are held daily.
Benalmádena Pueblo, the municipality’s Old Town, looms high above the coast on a hillside, with stunning views over the sea. It is a traditional Spanish village that retains its original character and remains relatively untouched by mass tourism, with inviting local bars and excellent Spanish restaurants, including one that is part of a first-class catering college. The village’s main attractions include a castle and the largest Buddhist stupa in Europe. The Archaeological Museum displays artefacts dating back to the Bronze Age, and – for the children – the Butterfly Museum is a wonder world of colour. Benalmádena Pueblo is the perfect resort for a relaxing holiday, and conveniently located for visitors who want to pop into town for a meal or a trip to the beach, just a few kilometres away.
Benalmádena is within easy reach of Málaga Airport, only 12 kilometres (seven miles) away, and there is a regular rail service from the airport to the Arroyo de la Miel train station.
The main bus stop is situated next to the tourist office in Avenida Antonio Machado.
