Calahonda might not be everyone’s ideal taste of Spain but it does have an attractive four-kilometre long stretch of sandy beach, dotted with several chiringuitos (beach bar/restaurants) and excellent sport and leisure facilities, including tennis courts, a riding club and a par-three “executive” golf course.
In fact, there is no need to stray too far afield when staying in Calahonda: Andalucía’s largest urbanisation has all these facilities in a concentrated area. With 40 kilometres of roads, several banks, three 24-hour medical centres, three shopping centres and a post office, this award-winning urbanisation caters spectacularly for visitors and residents alike.
Founded in 1963, the development is designed and purpose-built for tourists, not a former fishing village like most of the other Costa del Sol resorts.
Originally comprising apartment blocks, many of which are time-share units, Calahonda has continued to expand and improve its surroundings, and it now incorporates over 600,000 square metres of luxury villas, apartments and town houses. The urban area stretches back as far as four kilometres inland from the coast, and the higher-set properties offer superb views of the mountains and the Mediterranean.
Everything is within walking distance, through its leafy tree-lined avenues, but you can also avail yourself of the tourist train, which takes you around the resort complexes. Calahonda has a commercial centre, El Zoco, with supermarkets, shops, restaurants and other outlets. Avenida de España, which swings around from one end of Calahonda to the other, has a concentration of restaurants and bars to suit all tastes – a lively part of town that is home to many of the late-night bars, clubs and music venues. Within close proximity, there are banks, chemists, international medical centres and all the other main facilities required for a great holiday or more extended stay.
Calahonda is situated beside the national A7 motorway, midway between Marbella and Fuengirola and 35 minutes to the east of Málaga airport.
